The Great Linseed Challenge
All too often linseed is regarded as a low output niche crop and rarely gets the same attention as oilseed rape - BUT - grown well, linseed an out-perform OSR and even rival wheat and to prove that we want to find the best linseed growers in the country.
There are three awards categories in the Great Linseed Challenge;
- Best Net Margin per hectare
- Best Overall Yield
- Best Innovation in Linseed agronomy
Launched at Cereals '17, grower of both winter and spring linseed are eligible to enter and the Innovation award is open to agronomists too.
You can be a long-time grower of the crop or a complete novice. All that's needed to qualify for entry is to grow a minimum of 8 hectares for harvest 2018.
Winter or Spring sown, you can grow any variety under any agronomic regime, as long as it's legal.
With well over 25 years experience with the crop, we know that linseed has the capability to perform extremely well under the right management. So we're looking for growers prepared to puch the boundaries, search out the subtle tactics and apply the attention to detail that will get an award winning result.
The 'Best Overall Yield' and 'Best Net Margin' categories will be assessed through final tonnage sold off farm or verified by a third party weighbridge. The final results of this category will be announced in June '19.
The 'Best Innovation' category is there to identify novel activities that demonstrably improve the yeild or net margin of the crop. For example, a grower may manage Nitrogen applications in a different way that allows for less growth regulators on winter linseed, or perhaps, uses new precision farming techniques to optimise crop inputs and maximise output. This category is open to agronomists as well as growers themselves and judging will take place post-harvest 2018.
A panel of judges will make the final assessments and this may involve a farm visit.
CPM magazine will be monitoing the Challenge throughout with feature articles highlighting best practice among the UK's top linseed growers, agronomy updates and related stories. Winners will be announced in CPM magazine in June 2019.
