Spring Linseed Monitor Farm 2022 - Robert Payne Partners

August

Harvest is now complete, the yields were down due to the weather, since drilling on the 9th April to Harvest on 13th August rainfall was a total 63.2mm and maximum temperatures recorded of 39°C. The crop was easy to combine and didn’t take up too much storage which is a bonus around harvest with bumper winter crop yields. There is plenty of N left over for the next crop which will aid the rotation as a whole.

With the rain weeds have emerged, a herbicide has been applied for control of phacelia from the cover crop and fat hen. The crop is now growing on into may and the rain is pushing the growth stages on, the green-buds are emerging towards the end of May.

April

The crop is established and starting to grow away. Two insecticides were applied to keep the flax flea beetle off the crop. There is variation in how well the crop has established between the cover crop and no cover crop area, with the no cover crop area appearing better but this could be due to a finer tilth.

March

The cover crop has been grazed by sheep for two weeks and is now being incorporated in to ensure there is a good seedbed to drill the spring linseed into. This is part of a trial with Premium Crops to monitor the effect of a cover crop on establishing the following spring Linseed crop. The trial is made up of a cover crop of different species and a tramline of no cover crop. The following crop will be monitored for establishment and if there are any differences between the treatments with regards to flea beetle damage.
